Armed Forces Pen Pals
Phi Theta Kappa is offering you a chance to write a letter of support
to the armed forces. The four hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa are scholarship,
leadership, fellowship and service. This project provides a service to
those who serve our country. You can write one, two, or ten letters. The
best part is you do not have to pay postage. You can drop your letters
in any of the “mail” boxes on campus. The boxes will be located in Johnson
Hall 100, the Science building, the Student Center, Administration I,
the Library, the Technology Center (2nd floor), and the Continuing Education
Center (in the Tutoring Center). Once the letters and items are collected,
PTK will deliver the boxes to the USO Office in San Antonio.
If you would like a reply from your letter, please include your return
address in your letter. To protect the morale of our troops, the USO has
adopted a policy of scanning the letters. For this reason, please do not
seal your letters. You may also donate care package items such as food,
snacks, hygiene items, and magazines or books. (Suggested care package
items are listed on the boxes or click
here to view a list). Please help us give back to those who have given
so much for us! If you have any questions, please contact Melanie Ledwig
at 573-3291 ext. 3250 or melanie.ledwig@victoriacollege.edu.

VC Drama Department presents Hedda Gabler
The Victoria College Drama Department presents Hedda Gabler by
Henrik Ibsen with translation by Jon Robin Baitz beginning Thursday, Oct.
25 through Saturday, Oct. 27.
Hedda Gabler was written by Henrik Ibsen in 1890. Ibsen is considered
by most theatre historians as "the father of modern drama" and
Hedda is one of the first plays to be classified as a style of realism.
The main character, Hedda Gabler, is a woman who is bored with her current
life situation. She has married George Tesman, a meek professor, not out
of love but as a sense of security and perhaps duty. George and his Aunt
Julia are glad to see Hedda has "filled out" from their six
month long honeymoon. Hedda's primary joy is to make other people suffer
and attempts to destroy the lives of those around her. She attempts to
gain power over an old flame, possibly her first love Eilert Lovborg,
by sending him down the path of drink and destruction. She convinces Eilert
to commit suicide when he realizes his life is in shambles, by using one
of her dueling pistols she has inherited from her late father and with
which she shoots at people for the fun of it. She talks Eilert into killing
himself "beautifully" only to find his "beautiful"
suicide doesn't go as planned. The unscrupulous Judge Brack threatens
blackmailing Hedda, unless she consents to an affair with him. Unable
to deal with a potential scandal, an affair and a life of utter boredom,
Hedda is forced to make choices!
All shows begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Johnson Symposium. Tickets can be
purchased at the door for $5.

Physics Phridays Brown Bag Lunch
The Physics Phridays Brown Bag Lunch Series will begin on Friday, September
28 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Science Building Room 101. Bring
Lunch and a Friend and Explore Physics. The topic will be "Einstein's
Dream". It introduces string theory & shows how modern physics—being composed
of two theories that are ferociously incompatible—reached its schizophrenic
impasse: one theory, known as general relativity, is fantastically successful
in describing big things like stars & galaxies, & another, called quantum
mechanics, is equally successful in describing small things like atoms
& subatomic particles.
The series will continue on Friday, October 5. The topic will be "String's
the Thing". Greene describes the serendipitous steps that led from
a forgotten 200-year-old mathematical formula to the first glimmerings
of stringsquivering strands of energy whose different vibrations
give rise to quarks, electrons, photons, & all other elementary particles.
Strings are truly tiny, being smaller than an atom by the same factor
that a tree is smaller than the solar system. But, as Greene explains,
they are ablefor the first time everto combine the laws of
the large & the laws of the small into a proposal for a single, harmonious
theory of everything.
The series will end on Friday, October 12. The topic will be "Welcome
to the 11th Dimension". It shows how in 1995 Edward Witten of Princeton's
Institute for Advanced Study, aided by others, revolutionized string theory
by successfully uniting the five different versions into a single theory
that is cryptically named "M-theory," a development which required
a total of eleven dimensions.

VC/UHV Library Computer Access
Responding to increasing student concerns about the lack of available
computers in the Library, library staff this week is installing software
that requires login and enforces session time limits.
Over the years, increasing use of the Library by non-student computer
users and recreational use of the computers by students has sometimes
made available computers a bit short in supply. The new software will
place time limits on non-student users (the main users of recreational
computing). Library staff hopes that those time limits, in addition to
requiring a library borrowers card for use, will make more computing
time available to students.
All computer users in the Library, VC and UHV students included, will
now be required to login to Library computers using the barcode from their
campus ID/Library card. They will also be required to set up a pin number
with the Library Circulation Department before use. In anticipation of
the new software, those receiving new ID/Library cards this semester have
set up pin numbers at the time they received their new cards.
If you have any questions, please contact Joe Dahlstrom at jdahlstr@victoriacollege.edu.

Construction Resumes

Now that the weather has finally cleared, the contractor has resumed site work in several locations around campus. An in-ground vault for the telecom/fiber optic system was installed next to the CST Building parking lot yesterday. The contractor needs to run the telecom/fiber optic duct-bank from the vault to the duct-bank placed on the east side of the Student Center. This will involve digging up part of the street between the Student Center and the CST Building.
Beginning tomorrow, the contractor will begin saw-cutting the section of the street to be removed and dug up. Traffic will be reduced to one-lane flow during this time. Beginning Monday August 13, the street will be blocked to thru-traffic for the next 2 weeks while the trench/back-fill operation is underway to install the telecom/fiber optic duct-bank beneath the street. The Ben Wilson side of the street will become a dead-end with no outlet, except for entry/exit to the adjacent parking lots. The Ben Jordan side of the street will still have access to the campus interior at the intersection across from the Wood Building.
